A bright new year

Here is a post in expectation of a great year ahead. I have been pretty busy lately and not found time to post. But I do promise to come up with my views on a variety of issues, and as always, watch out for my "biased" comments. :-)

Wishing all of you a happy and prosperous[in every way ;-)] New Year 2009.
Ciao.

Review - Rock On!!

Well I hope I got the innovatively [numerologically?] framed title right with the 2 "bangs" at the end. Right from the opening scenes of the movie to the very end, I had this weird feeling of deja-vu. The writer-director, Abhishek Kapoor is definitely one from our generation, heavily "inspired" by that cult classic of our times, Dil Chahta Hai. The feeling only gets stronger what with the lead protagonist-singer-producer being the creator of DCH.

The film unfurls at its own pace[again very DCH-esque]. The storyline is predictable. But its treatment is interesting. Farhan Akhtar does act, albeit in patches. Arjun Rampal is in better form than some of his recent duds. Luke Kenny is passable, so is Prachi Desai. But the real scene-stealers are Purab Kohli[why don't we get to see him more often??] and newcomer Shahana. Purab is bang on with his comic timing. The scene, where he gloats on being complimented by his prospective girl-friend, is hilarious. Now how many times haven't we gone through that moment in real life?? :-D

But the real star of the show for me is the music. The movie declares at its ending credits,"Do not download the music, Buy the CD!!". And I agree. If at all there was an album worth buying in 2008, this is it. The lyrics by Javed Akhtar are absolutely "rock"ing. I've been drooling over its music for 3 weeks now.

The film has its nice moments, some truly hilarious, some very sentimental, some very crisp. It does have its bad moments as well. Mr.Rampal please, You only had to act like playing the guitar. And haven't we had enough of death bed scenes? Few of the story lines are incomplete like Farhan's break-up with his girl-friend. I would have loved to see the story dwell more on the ego clashes between the lead singer and the "genius" guitarist.

Nevertheless, I'm going with 4 stars for "Rock On!!". Watch it, its a refreshing change in Bollywood.

Oh BTW, the band in the film is called MAGIK. Yes with that 'K'. :P

Meaning of Love

Here is a piece of Jem[pun intended :-)] I discovered on the roads of Bangalore. An enlightened soul masquerading as an auto-driver had this to offer to the world.

"

Meaning of Love:

L - Losse of Mani
O - Out of Mind
V - Vest of Time
E - End of Life

Review - The Dark Knight

Make way, here comes the dark knight. Easily the best Batman movie till date, arguably the best ever Super Hero movie as well. The movie strikes a chord with u right from the first few minutes where the real Batman is shown bruised and battered. And maintains it for the next 2 and half hours. Ironically this movie is a tribute to the greatest nemesis of Batman, The Joker. And what a portrayal by Heath Ledger. Ledger was brilliant in Brokeback Mountain, he takes it a notch higher here. I'll watch this movie again only for Ledger's Joker. Pity that his best performance was his last as well. I would go with four and half stars for this "Bazooka" of a movie. Minus half only for the length of the film. Do not miss it. It shows up all other super hero movies as juvenile creations.

IPL Windup

So, the first weekend of IPL mania is done and dusted. Verdict is out, folks. The IPL is a smash hit. Whether they can sustain the interest for a longer period of time is debatable. I'm actually confused with my loyalties. Being a thoroughbred Bangalorean, I should support Royal Challengers. But some of my favourite players are playing for different teams. Confusion confusion. Royal Confusion :P

After the first round of games, Kolkatta are sitting pretty on top. Closely followed by a balanced Delhi and an energetic Chennai. My take is that these 3 teams would cruise to the semis. Now the last spot is the one which is up for grabs.

Bangalore should do good when all its recruits are back. Dale Steyn, Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar and Anil Kumble should form arguably the best bowling line up in the league. And with Chanderpaul, Misbah, White, Kallis and Boucher to shore up the batting, the team looks decent to give the other teams a run for their money. But where Bangalore loses out to the rest is the quality of local talent. Akhil B seems to be competing with Munaf Patel for the title of the worst fielder in the league. Not that he is much of an all rounder that he is made out to be. Vinay Kumar started out well only to be given few lessons by the old warhorse Shaun Pollock. It doesn't look like he will recover anytime soon. Dr.Mallya would be mighty pleased if this team makes the semis.

And finally a word of advice for our beloved Dravid. You are a brilliant batsman who can make anyone else look like paper cutouts. Stick to what you do best. Batting out the overs. Finishing the game in the end overs. Stonewalling when a rampant opposition bowler is looking menacing. Please do not try to do a Dhoni. You are "Rahul Dravid". And we all love you the way you are. Get the monkey off your back Jammy.

The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen)

What a movie ???!!! Phew...Surely one of the best movies I have ever watched. It is cinema at its very best. Though the movie has only english sub titles, it still succeeds in leaving you captivated. It is a simple story set in the GDR of 1980s. It follows the life of an artist through the eyes of a Stasi agent. The acting is brilliant. Very understated and apt. Script is tight. Treat for cinema loving folks. Go watch it... very few movies come close.

Cricket lessons

I have always wondered how the very best manage to get the worst deals in life. Never more so when I watch cricket. Take this for one. Sachin Tendulkar for all his glorious records , still gets some shockers from umpires for no fault of his. Rahul Dravid and his technical brilliance always get extinguished by deliveries which are now increasingly being called "Jaffa"s. Two test matches in a row now.

Probably there in lies a lesson for all of us. Instead of cribbing and blaming everything under the sun for the mess we find ourselves in, we would be better off dusting our kits and marching on. What says people?

Wandering Mind

So you guys must be wondering what took me so long to return. A combination of boredom, laziness, hectic work and plain disinterest. Well explanations given, now I'm back and for good.
Now, What am I doing staring into my laptop and typing out this blog on a chilly Friday evening. For starters, I was working till now. The whole office is deserted. And left with no option to vent my thoughts, I had to turn to this hallowed space. :-)

The match today was devoid of any fun, with India heading towards a heavy defeat. The heaviest maybe. The day was pretty interesting otherwise. A quick lunch at Kamath[the delicious Johar Roti meals], lots of TT, bit of Foosball and lots of tea. But don't think that is all I do at office. It was one of my lazy days in office. After all, I deserve one after 4 months of non-stop work.

Hunger calls and I need to go. but with a promise to come back soon.

Ciao!
